Dear RUN,

So many people struggled to pay rent after losing jobs and hours due to COVID, and we’ve pushed for state protections for those renters over and over. Right now, there’s state and federal money to help tenants stay housed, but it’s not getting to a lot of people in California.

If you’re wondering about any of this, if you have friends in a tight spot, if you’re worried about neighbors or friends (or your own family) getting evicted, join us on Wednesday for a conversation with Nur Kausar at the state department of Housing and Community Development. On our regular Community Care call, from 1-2pm, she’ll answer questions and give information about how to apply to get all your back rent and utilities paid for.

And did you see last week’s email? We announced dates and locations for all 10 of our regional convenings, better known as “There Ought To Be A Law.” Check below to register for your region’s event, or join another region if it works better for you. We’re meeting all through September to get your ideas about what should be a state law for housing justice!

As a reminder, masks will be required at any in-person regional convening.

Register right now for the regional convening closest to you!

CONNECT WITH RUN

  • Community Care calls are back! Join us this Wednesday, September 1, from 1-2pm for an hour of connection and information as we work towards statewide housing justice. Nur Kausar, who you might remember from her days at Housing CA, will share information and answer your questions about statewide rent relief and how to get money for back rent. Use this Zoom link or call in at 669 900 6833, meeting ID 977 6290 7497.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

  • Out of billions of dollars set aside to help prevent people from being evicted this year, only 11% of them have been spent. That means 89% of that money is just sitting, waiting to be distributed, and the Supreme Court struck down the Biden Administration’s extension on the eviction moratorium. In California, our moratorium ends Sept. 30, but there’s still a pandemic raging. We’ll talk about it on Wednesday’s Community Care call - join us!
