Dear RUN,

Remember way back last fall when we held five virtual “There Ought To Be A Law” brainstorms? We took those ideas, matched some of them with real bills in the state legislature, and started planning for how to turn one more into a bill for 2022.

Now it’s July 2021. One of our bills, AB 328, got turned into a two-year bill, which means we’ve got a chance to fight for it again next year. Another of our bills, AB 71, went through a lot of changes - but ultimately, a lot of it got turned into a historic allocation of $1 billion in ongoing funds for homeless housing and services. That’s money that we expect to be able to rely on every year.

Last week we sent emails during our Community Care call to try to get more of AB 71 - all the parts about how that money should be spent - into what’s called the trailer bill, the bill that comes after the budget passes. We’re still figuring out what made it in, but it does look like at least parts of AB 71 will be in that trailer bill and become law!

Join us at our Community Care call on Wednesday at 1pm to get the update and start thinking about what comes next. We can’t wait to see you, and we’re so thrilled to be working alongside you in this movement for housing justice.

Take good care,

Tori

CONNECT WITH RUN

  • Join us for this week’s Community Care call at 1pm on Wednesday, July 14. We’ll meet for an hour, and like always, you’ll have a chance to connect with fellow RUN members from across the state, hear about what’s going on with our bills, and do something for housing justice. (Sometimes it’s making phone calls! Sometimes it’s planning for a gathering! Sometimes it’s strategy!) We’ll have Spanish interpretation, and you can join us via Zoom at this link or by phone at 669 900 6833,  Meeting ID: 977 6290 7497.
  • Our final Marathoners training is Wednesday, July 21. If you’ve been to a previous training, you can join us for the final one!

NEWS YOU CAN USE

  • One of RUN’s biggest priorities last year was decriminalizing homelessness - in other words, preventing unhoused people from police harassment, getting tickets and going to jail simply because they don’t have a place to live. As we work towards a bill on that for next year, we have our work cut out for us, and recent events in LA (and Sacramento, and Chico, and many other parts of the state) show why. Here’s a big-picture summary of what’s been happening in Venice Beach in LA.
