This Friday is a big day for our legislation, because all three of our bills will be heard in Senate Appropriations (what’s known as the “suspense file”). We'll keep you updated about what happens and RUN's next steps.
Join us in telling Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez that Californians support SB 282! This important bill would allow people on parole to exit or avoid homelessness through supportive housing, an intervention proven to stabilize highly vulnerable populations.
We will be blitzing representatives’ social media feeds in a Twitter and Facebook storm next Wednesday, September 4, to push the Assembly to vote for SB 329. When you get the action alert email that day, reshare our messages on Twitter and Facebook - and don’t forget to tag your representatives!

RUN Met With the Governor’s Office
On Friday, August 23, a delegation of RUN members from Sacramento and the San Joaquin Valley met with Ronda Paschal, Governor Newsom’s Deputy Legislative Secretary. They asked for the governor’s support of AB 10, which would permanently expand the state Low Income Housing Tax Credit program. During the meeting, RUN leaders shared their personal connection to affordable housing and how a source of permanent funding would benefit them and their communities.

Farewell To Emily Serafy-Cox
As many RUN members may know by now, Emily Serafy-Cox is moving on to a new adventure in her professional journey. On behalf of Housing California, I wish to express our deep gratitude for the many contributions Emily has made to RUN and our collective work in California.
For four plus years Emily has invested deeply in fostering resident leadership, supporting local and regional partners, moving RUN’s policy priorities, coordinating Lobby Day, collaborating with Housing CA’s policy and communications staff, and more. Above all, Emily has always had the interests and growth of residents at heart.
Housing CA and RUN will miss Emily’s commitment to building resident power and dedication to ensuring all Californians have an affordable place to call home. We know Emily will bring her breadth of talents and her strong values wherever she is, and we wish her the very best.

To my RUN Family:
The RUN network has been my passion and my work for 4 1/2 years and now I find that it is time to move on. We have celebrated victories together and shared the anger of watching our friends and neighbors live without homes. I am infinitely grateful for how you all have walked alongside me in this struggle and challenged me to grow.
I will miss seeing you at events and on Zoom, but I know our paths will cross again.
I have accepted a position with a small foundation called Peace Development Fund that supports small peace and social justice organizations. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you are working with an organization that could use support.
Reporting Back From Crosstrain
Last week, seven leaders from across the state travelled to Washington State to join our sister organizations in Washington and Oregon. Leaders shared lessons they’d learned from this year’s campaigns and heard about challenges, wins, and strategy ideas from up and down the West Coast. They also practiced staying on message and owning media interviews in a mock press conference. If someone from your region went to Washington, ask them about their new ideas for RUN!!

Register for Fall Regional Convenings
The Fall Regional Convenings will be held in the months of September and October. This is a great opportunity for local leaders and members to welcome prospective members, share updates and successes, and prepare for upcoming events and actions. We encourage you to invite friends and family to join us as well. A couple of regions are finalizing logistics and we will release the registrations as soon as they are confirmed. Register today if you are in the San Diego and Los Angeles region. We look forward to seeing you there!
It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Lavearn London, a longtime leader from San Diego, lost her daughter, Kenyetta April Thorn, on Friday, August 16, 2019. We would like Ms. Lavearn to know that her RUN family is here for her and that we are thinking of her in this trying time. If you would like to make a contribution to help the family pay for April’s services, please follow this link; contributions of any amount will help.
