RUN Regionals Kick Off with Big Participation

The Residents United Network began 2018 with a series of regional meetings in San Jose, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco to prepare old RUNners and new on what’s ahead in 2018. Our regional teams took this key opportunity to provide leadership training on “Story of Self,” a bedrock training tool targeted at developing skills to empower residents to share their lived experience (expertise) to advance housing justice in California.  Participants also received information on the developing 2018 legislative agenda, the 2018 Veterans and Affordable Housing Bond measure on the November ballot, and the proposed Proposition 13 split-roll measure (Make It Fair).

As always, regionals provided an opportunity for seasoned RUN leaders to share their stories and lead conversations on Why RUN exists, the history of housing discrimination and the movements that have sought justice across the country. RUN training and development provides leaders with opportunities to engage in the Housing California Annual Conference Lobby Day and advocacy efforts locally, regionally and in the Capitol.  Thank you to all the participants who have joined us this year.  We are looking forward to greatness in 2018 and beyond.

If you would like to join a RUN regional meeting this winter there are still a few opportunities. Join us in San Jose on February 2 and Biola on February 10. Register here.

New! Check out our RUN Training Sessions webpage! The first training will cover video conference and email skills. Future trainings will include policy, how a bill becomes a law, talking to legislators, and other topics. Save this page to look for and register for opportunities throughout the year.

Costa Hawkins Bill Dies in Legislature

Several hundred Californians showed up to an Assembly Housing and Community Development hearing Thursday in the Capitol to voice their support of, or opposition to, AB 1506 (Bloom) to repeal the Costa Hawkins Act of 1995. The bill would have repealed the prohibition on cities to create rent control ordinances. AB 1506 died shy of one vote.

Take the RUN Digital Challenge

Everyone in California knows there is an affordable housing crisis, but few people know the impact that residents in affordable communities are having on the conversation. In order to build on the momentum of this year’s housing victories, it’s vital that more people learn about the opportunities and People Power that organized residents of affordable homes bring to the table.

You can help by participating in the RUN Digital Challenge. Increase the profile of affordable housing issues and stories on social media by bringing people you know into these important discussions!

Here are sample posts to share with your friends and social media followers. Please post one of these before February 9. Pick any of these to send:
