5 years of RUN As we celebrate RUN’s 5th anniversary, we will be asking RUN members and partners to share their thoughts on the importance of housing and why they RUN. This month, Anne Bradley, a RUN member with St. Mary’s Gardens in Oakland, shares her reflections. On affordable housing: “Safe and affordable housing promotes good mental and physical health. It promotes security and stability and most especially peace of mind. Safe and affordable housing means I have a community of neighbors with shared values.” On why she RUNs: “I RUN because I am fortunate to live in affordable housing. I see the homeless on the streets and I want to be part of the solution to this crisis. As a resident leader of RUN, I can realize this goal and get everyone housed.” On her wishes for RUN and its members: “Omg look at how much RUN has accomplished. I think we should focus on expanding our base to counties which are not represented. Time to celebrate!” | | | |
San Diego advocacy efforts RUN members in San Diego have been key to the success of SB 329. The numerous actions that they have been taking are helping to move legislation. On April 24, a delegation that included Miriam Rodriguez, Mehrsa Imani, and Rickie Brown had their first meeting with Senator Ben Hueso’s district office. The delegation shared information about San Diego Housing Federation and RUN. They also shared information about RUN’s legislative priorities. A second meeting, in May, was an opportunity for the delegation to advocate for the Senator’s vote on SB 329 and deliver postcards that had been signed by constituents of the 40th Senate district and collected by RUN members. Members are energized and ready to keep pushing until we see discrimination against Section 8 voucher holders end. We look forward to continue relationship building of RUN members with their elected officials. | |
The San Joaquin Valley is building power! It’s great to see the San Joaquin Valley network strengthening and building their power. Residents of Visionary Home Builders, Housing Authority of the County of San Joaquin and additional community members in Stockton, including Pandora Crowder, Jennifer Flores, Maria Hernandez, Virda Rainey, Kristy Roos, and Angela Rueda, met with Senator Cathleen Galgiani’s district office on May 24. The RUN representatives addressed RUN priority bills and homelessness in the city of Stockton. We look forward to continuing to develop a relationship with the Senator’s office and for the Senator to hear the call to action that her residents are making. | |
