Dear RUN,

You heard it here first: California’s budget, signed into law by Governor Newsom, includes $1 billion in ongoing funds for homeless housing and services. It’s real, and it’s a first: California is the first state to commit this much money for homelessness in the country, and ongoing funds was exactly what we were hoping for.

Here it is in print:

What does this have to do with RUN? All our work pushing for AB 71 this year - at Lobby Days, in meetings with our legislators, our testimony at committee hearings, our annoying (I mean persistent) phone calls - convinced the legislature that this was important to a lot of people across the state. The Senate and the Assembly told the Governor this ongoing funding was important to them, and he finally agreed.

You might not have read much about it online or in the papers yet, because one more good thing happened last week that got a lot of attention, which is that California has likely extended its eviction moratorium for three more months. Our partners at Housing Now are happy with a lot of parts of that extension and less than happy with other parts, but that’s a very big deal, too!

We’ll know a lot more about what all this means by next Wednesday, July 7, when we’ll have our next Community Care call at 1pm. This week instead of Community Care, we’ll have our second of three RUN Summer Marathoners trainings, exclusively for the people who attended the training in May. So be sure to join us next Wednesday 7/7 to celebrate with us!

Take good care,

Tori

  • We will NOT have a Community Care call this week because of second of three Summer Marathoners trainings. If you attended the last one in May, we’ll see you right back at the same link. If you did not attend the last one, this second one is closed. We’ll see everyone again for a Community Care call on Wednesday, July 7 at 1pm.

  • The state moratorium was extended over the weekend. "Gov. Newsom and key legislators agree to extend statewide eviction ban through Sept. 30, to provide full back rent for tenants and landlords. The deal includes fixes to speed rent relief payments." Read more here.
