Dear RUN,

Over the last year, we did a lot: even in a pandemic, we met virtually almost every week, we figured out what we wanted to be a law this year, we pushed hard at Lobby Days and in legislator visits to make sure people in power knew what we cared about, and we did not let up.

We’re still waiting to see if one of our bills, AB 71, could become law through the state budget, and because of some weird procedural stuff, we probably won’t know until June 30 now.

In the meantime, a bunch of your fellow RUN leaders are speaking at next week’s 2021 Housing California Un-Conference! The last day to register - for free, if you’re a RUN member - is this Thursday, 6/17, so if you’ve been putting it off, now’s the time to make sure you can come support them.

On Wednesday morning at 9, RUN member Nina Jorgensen will speak about our work on a panel called “Tenant-Led Housing Justice Movements: Where Are We in 2021?” Robert Villagomez of RUN will facilitate the conversation, where you’ll learn about how residents of Hillside Villa, an affordable housing development in LA, are pushing the city to make their building affordable forever using eminent domain, plus the story of how Patricia Mendoza fought eviction three different times during the pandemic and got San Diego County to pass a huge eviction ban.

On Tuesday morning at 10:45, RUN member Zella Knight will speak on a plenary called “Advancing Bold Solutions at Scale: California’s Roadmap Home 2030” alongside other members of the Roadmap Home coalition.

And on Tuesday afternoon at 2:45, RUN member Daphine Lamb-Perillliat will speak about her experience as a Housing Justice Narrative fellow at a workshop called “The Power of Building a Unifying Housing Narrative.”

Come hang out with us! Register by this Thursday 6/17 here.

Take good care,

Tori

News you can use

  • The CA eviction moratorium must stay in place until rent relief dollars actually reach tenants. Otherwise we will see a tidal wave of evictions start on June 30. So much of the money that’s supposed to be coming to tenants hasn’t gotten out to us yet, both in California and across the country. Here’s a story from Fresno about a girl who thought she was protected from eviction, but she was not.
