Dear RUN,

Big news: AB 71 passed out of the Revenue and Tax Committee last Monday, 7-4! Now we need to get it through the Housing and Community Development Committee, which will hear the bill this Thursday, sometime between 2pm and 5:30pm.

It was amazing to hear caller after caller say last week, “I’m with the Residents United Network,” representing residents of affordable housing and their allies from all over the state. We’ve gotta do it again this week. If we get through Housing, the next step will be the Appropriations Committee in May, but we’re really going one day at a time here.

We’ll send out an email on Thursday morning with the number to call. If you’d like to be added to the list to get a text reminder, write us back. We’ll prep for the hearing and make another push to get legislators on board at our Community Care call this Wednesday at 1pm, so join us if you’d like some support.

In the meantime, registration is open for the virtual Housing California 2021 Un-conference, June 22-24! RUN members can register for free. When you go to the link, it is a little confusing. Click “pay by credit card” and then click the plus sign where it says FULL CONFERENCE - Residents United Network (RUN) Leaders and you won’t have to pay by credit card.

One more thing: tomorrow, Wednesday 4/28 at 10am, you can join Community Change for a national call about the need for affordable housing on the federal level, an event with Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon. It’s free - register here.
